WHAT IS DISTRICT HEATING?

District heating is an environmentally sustainable heating system that reduces the need for fossil fuels such as natural gas and fuel oil.

Through a network of underground pre-insulated pipelines, hot or superheated water generated by central heating plants is distributed directly to buildings, providing space heating and domestic hot water in an efficient, safe, and cost-effective way.

HOW IT WORKS

Heat is generated in plants powered by renewable energy sources (primarily biomass and solar thermal energy) or by combined heat and power (CHP) plants, which simultaneously produce heat and electricity. In many cases, waste heat from industrial processes or waste treatment facilities is also recovered.

The resulting thermal energy is then distributed directly to buildings in the form of hot or superheated water through a network of underground twin pre-insulated district heating pipes, which maintain a stable water temperature while minimizing heat loss.

A simple heat exchange substation, which replaces the traditional boiler in each building, transfers heat from the district heating network to the internal distribution system and can also provide domestic hot water.
