District cooling supplies chilled water for the internal cooling of industrial, commercial and residential buildings through a closed-circuit pipe network.
In technical and functional terms, it works very much like district heating. A district cooling system can achieve an efficiency rate 5 and in some cases even 10 times higher than that of a conventional cooling system.
ECOLINE & ECOTECH pre-insulated pipes and fittings are designed specifically to carry fluids at low temperatures as well, that is, liquids that need to be thermally insulated, as well as physically, from the surrounding environment. The cold water used in a district cooling plant may come from free sources such as seawater, or it may be produced from sources such as waste heat through the use of turbine or absorption chillers or electric chillers.
The make-up of these pipes is extremely simple and at the same time extremely effective. They consist of an outer pipe (known as the casing pipe) and an inner pipe (known as the service pipe), which carries the fluid. These pipes are insulated by injecting a rigid polyurethane foam, which provides a high degree of thermal insulation with a far smaller thickness than other materials require.
